Abstract

In this article originally published in 2005 in The American Sociologist, Michael Burawoy proposes a 30-year self-analysis of his supervising practice at UC Berkeley. Highlighting the power imbalance structuring the relationship between supervisor and supervisee, Burawoy unveils paths for a sociology of sociological supervising, opening the black box of the interactions, rites and interests surroun- ding the production of a dissertation – inviting others to follow the same reflective path, both in the United States and in Brazil.
