For this, data from the National Penitentiary Department (DEPEN) corresponding to the Analytical Reports of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, from the period between 2005 and 2019, always referring to the month of December; the National Penitentiary Department (DEPEN) – National Survey of Penitentiary Information, from January to June 2021; the Superintendence of Penitentiary Services (SUSEPE) for the year 2020; of the Superintendence of Penitentiary Services (SUSEPE) for the year 2022. From 1990 to 2022, incarceration rates in Brazil have grown by more than 400%. This situation of growth in the number of prisoners and incarceration rates, despite some variations, is repeated in all states of the country, and Rio Grande do Sul is no different. In this sense, given the importance of systematizing and understanding the data and particularities of incarceration in the context of the state, the present work intends to present in detail the situation of incarceration in Rio Grande do Sul, and advance some hypotheses regarding the trends verified in the period analyzed.
