Delivery app workers in Brazil
between subordination and “self-employed” work
Abstract
This article analyzes the work of delivery men who work through platform-companies, among the so-called location-based platforms. The research was concentrated in the metropolitan regions of Recife and the Federal District and focused on the multiple dimensions of these workers' experience in this type of activity and the labor conditions involved in it. Among the problematized aspects are algorithmic management, subordination at work, political-union demands and forms of struggle and resistance, with special emphasis given to their perceptions of the contradictory situation in which they are inserted: between the subordinate condition and the discourse of “autonomy”. The research was mainly based on conducting 83 interviews in 2021.
